What Selank Peptide is

The plain-language version, first.

The name, plain
A seven amino acid tuftsin derivative developed in Russia as an anxiolytic, tested almost entirely without placebo controls.

The other Moscow peptide, built from an immune fragment rather than a stress one.

Selank is a synthetic seven amino acid peptide derived from the immune peptide tuftsin, developed in Russia and studied as an anxiolytic. It is not approved by the FDA, the EMA or Health Canada, and almost none of the human work on it used a placebo control.

Every laboratory that produces a famous compound tends to have a second one in the drawer.

Selank is Semax's drawer-mate. Same Moscow institute, same era, same construction philosophy.

The starting material is different: tuftsin, a four-residue immune peptide, with the same stabilising tail welded on that Semax got.

So where Semax began life as a piece of a stress hormone, Selank began as a piece of immune signalling, and the interest shifted toward the calm side of brain chemistry.

Registered and sold in Russia. Essentially unknown to every regulator west of it.

The pattern repeats: a real pharmacy product in one country, a blank file in yours.

What is Selank?

Mechanism studied, not outcome promised.

Not a GABA-A ligand

Unlike benzodiazepines it does not bind the receptor directly. The proposed route is modulation of GABAergic gene expression, plus serotonin, dopamine and BDNF effects.

The Pro-Gly-Pro tail

Three residues added to tuftsin C-terminus purely for stability. Without it the parent peptide is cleared too fast to be useful.

Proposed to work the brain's own braking system, in rodents, in one country.

The proposed mechanism runs through GABA signalling, which is the brain's braking system, along with effects on an enzyme that breaks down internal opioid peptides.

Slower breakdown of the brain's own calm-down molecules is a coherent idea.

Coherent, rodent-established, and single-country. The whole Moscow pattern in one sentence.

Like its labmate it ships as nasal drops for the same honest reason: peptides and stomachs do not get along, and the nose is a shortcut.

Here's the honest part. The braking-system story comes from the same closed loop of institutions that built the molecule.

Independent hands have barely touched it. Until they do, the mechanism is a well-told story from a single storyteller.

The research so far for Selank Peptide

Where the evidence is thin, we say so.

What exists

A real Russian clinical literature in generalised anxiety and related conditions, domestic registration as an anxiolytic, and preclinical mechanism work on GABAergic gene expression and BDNF.

What does not

Placebo-controlled human trials in any quantity. Any assessment by the FDA, EMA or Health Canada. Any registered Western trial we could identify.

Featured angle
Anxiety is the worst place to skip a placebo arm

Placebo response rates in anxiety trials are among the highest in medicine. Much of the Selank human literature uses active comparators or open-label designs rather than placebo control, which means the size of the drug effect cannot be separated from the placebo effect. That is not a small methodological quibble in this indication.

Same passport situation as its labmate, same missing control groups.

The file reads like Semax's with the names changed, and the weaknesses are identical.

Russian registration, Russian clinical use, and a clinical literature largely without placebo controls, which leaves the interesting questions structurally unanswerable.

An uncontrolled trial can tell you people took something and time passed. The control group is what turns that into knowledge.

No Western regulatory assessment of any kind. No modern randomised trial in the Western literature.

Two Moscow peptides, one methodology gap, zero independent replication. We stock it, we test what is in the vial, and the file is what it is.

Who studies Selank Peptide

Who tends to order this one, and why.

A research compound does not have one audience. It has a handful of rooms where the same question keeps coming up, and the question is a different question in each of them.

Anxiety pharmacology

Groups looking for anxiolytic mechanisms outside direct GABA-A modulation, where dependence and tolerance are the limiting problems.

Russian peptide research

A distinct decades-long tradition of developing short regulatory peptides as drugs, which also produced Semax from the same institute.

Tuftsin and immune peptides

The parent peptide is an immune molecule, and those effects do not disappear because a psychiatric application was found.

Trial methodologists

It is a clean case study in what a body of evidence can and cannot tell you when placebo control is largely absent.

Sold for laboratory research only. This is not guidance for personal use, and nothing here is a recommendation.

Selank Peptide backstory

How it got here.

Tuftsin was characterised as an immune peptide, a four residue fragment from the immunoglobulin G heavy chain that stimulates phagocytosis. Its discovery had nothing to do with psychiatry.

Soviet and then Russian peptide research had a distinct character: a strong interest in short regulatory peptides as drugs, pursued for decades, largely separately from Western pharmaceutical development. Semax, from the same institute and the same tradition, came out of ACTH rather than tuftsin.

Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the Pro-Gly-Pro extension added for stability, and registered domestically as an anxiolytic. It has never crossed into the Western regulatory system, and the evidence base it carries was generated under different expectations about trial design.

  1. 1

    An immune fragment

Tuftsin, four residues from the immunoglobulin G heavy chain, known for stimulating phagocytosis. Nothing about it suggested psychiatry.

  2. 2

    Moscow, and a stability fix

The Institute of Molecular Genetics added Pro-Gly-Pro to the C-terminus to slow degradation, producing the heptapeptide Selank.

  3. 3

    Registered, but only there

Approved as an anxiolytic in Russia and in clinical use. Never evaluated by the FDA, EMA or Health Canada.

Buying Selank Peptide in Canada

What ships, how fast, and the paperwork.

The hard part of buying research material is almost never the compound. It is the logistics. What leaves the building, how fast it moves, and what is in the box beside the vial. Here is ours, plainly.

The short version

Same day out of British Columbia

Our building, our cold packs, our people, and nothing sitting in a customs queue while you refresh a tracking page.

Then into the fridge

Keep it cold and keep it dark. Sealed and freeze-dried it handles a rough trip without ice. Once it lands, fridge.

Registered somewhere is not the same as proven

Selank is a registered anxiolytic in Russia and that is real. It is also true that the evidence behind it was generated under different trial design expectations, largely without placebo controls, and that no Western regulator has ever assessed it.

Stuff people ask about Selank Peptide

If your question is not here, email us. Real human answers.

It is registered as an anxiolytic in Russia and has been in clinical use there. It has never been evaluated or approved by the FDA, the EMA or Health Canada, and we could not identify any registered Western clinical trial of it.

Not sample size. The absence of placebo controls. Much of the human work uses active comparator designs or is open label. In anxiety, where placebo response rates are among the highest in medicine, a trial without a placebo arm cannot separate the drug effect from the placebo effect.

It is tuftsin, a four amino acid immune peptide released from the heavy chain of immunoglobulin G, extended with Pro-Gly-Pro on the C-terminus. Tuftsin stimulates phagocytosis. The three residue extension is there purely to slow enzymatic degradation, since the parent peptide is cleared too quickly to be usable.

The proposed mechanism is indirect. Rather than acting as a GABA-A receptor ligand the way benzodiazepines do, Selank is described as modulating expression of genes in the GABAergic system, with additional reported effects on serotonin and dopamine turnover and on brain-derived neurotrophic factor. That work is largely preclinical.

No, though they share an origin. Both came out of the same Russian institute and the same research tradition of short regulatory peptides. Semax derives from a fragment of ACTH and is studied for cognitive and neuroprotective effects. Selank derives from tuftsin and is studied as an anxiolytic. Different parents, different targets.

Russian clinical reports describe an anxiolytic effect without the sedation and dependence associated with benzodiazepines, and the proposed non-GABA-A mechanism would be consistent with that. We would flag that this claim comes from the same literature that largely lacks placebo controls, so it is a reported profile rather than an independently verified one.
